Description

This monument was dedicated on August 23, 1997 in honor of Major League Baseball player Stanley Coveleski (July 13, 1889 - March 20, 1984).

Coveleski pitched for several teams in a career that spanned 17 years from 1912 to 1928. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969.

The dedication took place right before the beginning of the annual Anthracite Heritage Parade.

Ed Cove, nephew of Shamokin native Stanley Covelesk, served as the guest speaker. Cove talked about the experiences he had with his famous uncle. Project committee members distributed autographed baseball cards of Coveleski and displayed old-time photos of his career.

Tom Kutza, popular broadcaster for WISL radio, served as master of ceremonies. Kutza reminisced with stories about his interviews with Coveleski.
