Description

This monument was dedicated on May 29, 1989, Memorial Day, to Shamokin and Coal Township men and women who were killed in our nation's wars (Civil War to present). 

Judge Barry Feudale, of Northumberland County Courts, was the dedication speaker in front of a large crowd. President of the Independent Veterans Memorial Committee, Roger N. Alleman, presented the memorial to Harvey M. Boyer, mayor of Shamokin and Eleanor Kuhns, vice president of Coal Township Board of Commissioners. Boyer called the monument a "great tribute". Boyer added that the city will do more to further beautify the memorial site - installing park benches, light standards, and decorative tile. (These advancements have been made)

Area veterans helped to unveil the monument. There are more than 500 names listed on the memorial.

Materials & Measurements:

It is made of white brick and the glass cases are made by Poblocki and Sons of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Also, it measures 25 feet in length and is eight feet high with enclosed panels listing the names of more than 500 deceased veterans.
