Description

This monument was dedicated on May 30, 1988, Memorial Day, to Cpl. David Witmer (December 29, 1947 - November 13, 1983), a nine-year veteran of the Shamokin Police Department who was killed in the line of duty. Also, it is dedicated to all police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

Cpl. Witmer is the only Shamokin Policeman to be killed in the line of duty. He was killed by a single gunshot wound to the neck while responding to a call in Trevorton, PA. His murder was Preston Pfeifly.

The monument was unveiled by members of the Witmer family, including Sue Witmer, the late officer's widow; Ruth Witmer, his mother; and Sally Narins, his sister.

Members of the Faternal Order of Police, Anthracite Lodge, conducted services at the memorial. Christopher Williams, F.O.P. president and Coal Township patrolman, headed the ceremonies. There were a basket of flowers placed by the memorial and the Policeman's Prayer was recited.
(The Policeman's Prayer is inscribed on the back of the memorial.)

Harvey M. Boyer Sr., mayor of Shamokin, presented each member of the Witmer family with a key to the City of Shamokin.

There is a patch of highway on Route 225 off of the Cameron Bridge into Zerbe Township named after Cpl. Witmer.
Here is the letter of commission.
