Description
This monument was dedicated on November 11, 1982, Veterans Day, for all veterans of all wars from Shamokin and Coal Township.
On November 11, 1982 during Veterans Day, there was a Veterans Day program in Shamokin Area High School auditorium. The program was filled with recognition, appreciation, and solemnity out of respect for all veterans of all wars.
Former assemblyman, Paul G. Ruane, cited John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields.
Ruane stated that we should remember the fallen heroes, stating "we should arm ourselves with a burning fervor for [our] own ideals and principles and transform these ideals into deeds of individual dedication."
During the dedication of the monument, Senator Edward Helfrick delivered the main address. Charles Bressi, commander of Byler Quinn Post 2318, spoke for a short time before the unveiling of the monument. John Wheary, of the monument committee, gave Peter Molesevich, designer of the granite piece the final payment. Master of ceremonies, Daniel Strausser, said that 700 million persons are in war, which is one of every six persons in the world.
